Propolis at its most pure and unprocessed form. Its collection takes place almost all year round, but mainly during springtime. Propolis can be consumed as such. It has disinfecting and painkilling properties for the mouth and throat. In case of a simple cold a widely used “recipe” is to chew pure propolis: chew a chickpea-sized ball until it ceases feeling like a chewing gum and becomes crumble, then swallow. Repeat 2-3 times per day upon feeling sore and painful throat or burning nose. Sore throat and runny nose are usually relieved within 2 days. Same applies for gum disease, mouth ulcers (canker sores) etc.

A few words on propolis…

Propolis is a resinous sticky-like substance that bees collect from various plants, enrich it in their bodies with beeswax, pollen, enzymes and other substances they harvest from their environment, and use it to seal and disinfect the interior of their hives.

Its name originates from the fact that bees place this substance in front of the entrance of the hive (pro-polis in ancient Greek = in front of the town) in order to make it narrower and prevent enemies, such as mice, big caterpillars and others, from entering their colony.

Propolis mainly contains resin (55%), beeswax (30%), essential oils (10%), pollen (5%). Its other ingredients include aromas, sugars, terpenes, aliphatic acids and esters, flavones, minerals, vitamins, trace minerals, as well as many other known and unknown compounds depending on harvested resources and environmental conditions.

It is thought to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and it is used for treatment of wounds in respiratory organs, oral cavity and other body areas.

Propolis contains flavones and flavanols in high concentrations that have the following effects on the human body:

Provide anti-inflammatory support to joints, skin and connective tissues;

Protect Vitamin C from oxidation;

Benefit capillary blood vessels, while also improving blood circulation;

Boost adrenalin by inhibiting o-methyltransferase enzyme;

Restrain erythrocyte aggregation;

Act as antibacterials on gram positive and gram negative bacteria, and

Serve as antiseptics.
